02 Sep Variety is the Spice of life
It’s said that variety is the spice of life and I think that certainly applies to nutrition. If our bodies need many vitamins and minerals, then we need to eat all sorts of foods to obtain those.
In previous blog posts, we have discussed the importance of a healthy relationship with food and building sustainable eating habits that both fuel your body and allow you to enjoy what you eat and drink. With the exception of medical conditions that are managed and treated by eliminating certain foods, many people can subscribe and benefit from two principles: frequency and portion size.
Frequency and portion size are two factors that can be considered to determine how often and/or how much is ok to eat (or drink) foods and beverages. When we consider these things, it allows us permission to eat and drink for our personal health and goals. It also creates room for us to cut back or continue enjoying food and drink without an all or nothing mentality that can sometimes lead to feeling restricted or shame, not to mention negative health effects from not fueling our body well.
So the next time you’re fine-tuning your diet, remember variety is a wonderful thing and consider how often and how much you’re enjoying various foods and drinks. Then figure out if the frequency and portion sizes fit into your lifestyle and goals.
